Orkut + Google Chat

Orkut has the added a new feature which integrates Google Talk with the orkut interface. This is nice as most indians have a habit of using the scrapbook as a chat. But in my AMD64 Ubuntu Edgy, there is a flash which hides the top part of the interface. It is irritating as I can’t look at the top navigation menu. Either Google should change the stupid flash interface or Flash player must be made easier to install on Linux.

Amazon Mechanical Turk pays

Filed under: Internet — cnu @ 9:15 pm

Today I received a mail from Amazon regarding the Mechanical Turk program and I have earned about $3.75. All the HITs were accepted by Amazon and I think I am interested in this project. It would help me in earning some money for my website.

But going back to the MTurk website, all the current HITs are to identify the best establishments in a particular locality. And it is USA. I wonder if the next set of HITs would be aimed at the world wide population.

Flooding in Chennai

Filed under: Personal — cnu @ 7:22 pm

Chennai, Tamil Nadu was badly affected today due to the heavy rains. Already the bus service through my house was cancelled for nearly a week, there has been heavy flooding all over chennai. Flood warning has been issued in areas like Virugambakkam, Chinmaya Nagar(near my house), Mehta Nagar, MMDA, Arumbakkam, Aminjikarai, KK Nagar, etc.

But I am confident there won’t be any water logging inside our house as it is safely situated at a higher place than the other areas. Anyway some say that some lake water is to be released and it may flood these areas.

Also we don’t know how Anna University is going to conduct the exams. Already exams for more than 2 weeks were rescheduled and even today’s exams were rescheduled to 24.

It is boring to be sitting inside the house without any power supply.

Amazon Mechanical Turk

Filed under: Internet — cnu @ 9:40 am

Amazon has started a new project called Mechanical Turk where people are assigned jobs which is difficult to be done by machines. As a reward, we can get paid by the person requesting the job. I have signed in for the program and have done 4 jobs. The jobs are easy to do – like editing the product description, editing the features listing. After the requester approves the work done, I would get the money for the HIT done.

But is there a loophole? What if the requester rejects the HIT but makes use of the job done by me. It would mean that I would not be payed for what I did. I wonder what measures Amazon have against such things.
